Through the CCLF program, some UCalgary law students with knowledge of French gain valuable skills in French legal writing and advocacy, as well as an in-depth understanding of important issues surrounding language rights in Canada. Students who obtain the CCLF will help improve access to justice for French-speaking clients in Alberta and across Canada, a group that is often underserved in the legal system due to language barriers. University of Calgary law students have completed articling at all levels of provincial, federal and Supreme Court of Canada courts. Through a legal internship, you will gain insight into the judicial system, work directly with judges, and further develop your research, legal writing, and ability to analyze legal issues. ALS student social workers can make advocacy, conduct court proceedings, and participate in dispute resolution, negotiation, and early resolution of cases for their clients. UCalgary Law encourages applications from individuals who were on staff after university or who came to the university after their work experience. Our Juris Doctor (JD) programme prepares you for a variety of roles within the legal system, laying the foundation for the development of competent, talented, creative and sensitive professionals, and ensuring you are prepared for the rapidly changing legal market. This four-year programme combines legal and management studies and prepares graduates for positions in areas such as corporate law, commercial disputes, international law, business consulting, government services and policy, taxation, finance and accounting, and environmental management. Third-year students have the opportunity to complete an accredited law program at an international law school or civil law school in Canada. The international requirement of the upper year may be supplemented by an international exchange for an academic semester if approved by the Vice-Dean. The most logical term for the exchange is the autumn semester of the third year, when no compulsory courses are scheduled. For 3.5 years, you will develop your legal skills and ability to understand, analyze, develop and implement public policy, and you will be prepared to take on leadership positions in the public or private sector where coordinated legal and policy expertise is needed to succeed.
